Three of Every 10 Drunk Drivers Were Almost in a Coma Behind The Wheel
In six months, the Montevideo Municipality sent 314 people to the Misdemeanors Court for alcohol abuse
It is considered that driving becomes impossible when the driver has more than three milligrams of alcohol per liter of blood. Three beers and three whiskies are the quantities to get there.
Apart from receiving a ticket and taking away their driver's license, according the misdemeanors Law no. 19.120, driving vehicles with more than 1,2 grams per liter in blood is considered a fault, and such person should be taken to court to be judged and pay with community service, or perhaps end up behind the bars.
Eight of every 10 offenders reported to the Misdemeanors Court were caught during the weekends.
Bosca said the highest levels of spirometry are registered between 6 and 10 am, and mostly belonging to people leaving night clubs.
The Chief believes the community service penalty has had a dissuasive effect in drivers, but it is not enough for stubborn drivers.
"At the beginning there was a group between 25 and 40 unconscious drivers out of 100 spirometries per weekend. The number went down to 15 now" said to El Observador. For instance, there was no record of spirometry higher than 1,2 grams during Saturday April 26th, and there were only 10 the following day.
