Uruguayan Gamers Are the Best in Hispanic America

After winning the previous champion, the team based in Marindia obtained USD17,000 and are about to enter the world championship of one of the most important electronic games

The screen showing the game became full of battle colours. Suddenly, the voice of the commentator accelerated and became louder. As if shouting a goal, it announced the victory of Pineapple Express (PEX), the team of gamers based in Marindia, made up by three Uruguayans, a Peruvian and an Argentinean. This triumph brought along a USD17,000 prize and the ticket to Seattle to compete for the qualification to the world championship of League of Legends (LoL), one of the most important electronic sports.

“We are all PEX,” shouted one of the presenters, surrounded by six thousand persons in an event in Buenos Aires which gathered games from all the region. The team located in Uruguay is now the only one that can get to the world championship. They only have to beat the Brazilian team now.
The encounter will take place on August 29th in the Pax Prime, a gaming festival which features tournaments and exhibitions. If they win, they will travel to South Korea, considered the “mecca of e-sports”.

Last year, the world final of LoL, broadcasted on Twitch, their streaming web page, reached an audience of 32 million people. This years, Riot Games, the organizing company, expects an attendance of 40,000 to 50,000 people in the stadium. The winning prize is USD 1 million.

“I can´t believe it is happening,” said one of the commentators when PEX was beating its rival, a Mexican group called Lyon Gaming which has been the best in Latin America for a year and a half now. As it happens in non-electronic sports, the Uruguayan team turned the match which was first being dominated by the Mexicans.
Jorge PeraCor, one of the gamers from PEX said to Cromo that it was a very special victory because Lyon had beat them in the previous competition in Chile. PeraCor was optimistic about their next match, “every day we play against Brazilian teams, we are used to it”.

League of Legends is an electronic sport in which two teams face on a fantastic ground full of characters, magic and all kind of powers to destroy the “nexus” of the opponents. For these young men, playing is their job and they train eight hours per day to be among the best. And they made it.
